The iPad: not for geeks

Apple's long-awaited launch of the iPad met a mixed response from the blogosphere, with the IT press in particular slating it (excuse the pun) because it doesn't have a 'proper' operating system like a laptop - which means no multi-tasking, no Flash player and applications rigorously controlled by Apple.

The point, however, is that the iPad isn't aimed at them.  It's a netbook replacement for people who are not IT geeks — users who just want to be able to surf the web, email, read books, watch occasional videos, and customise it with easy-to-install apps. They don't want to worry about viruses, crashes and the other problems that a 'proper' OS brings. For them, a bigger iPod Touch is perfect.

After months of hype, perhaps a sense of anti-climax was inevitable, but do we really need a revolution every time Steve Jobs steps onto the stage? Having noticed that Apple's stock soared — and then fell eight points in less than a day, maybe we do.

But maybe the real target market for the iPad becomes apparent when you take note of its dimensions - at 9.5 x 7.5 inches, the new device should fit perfectly into a handbag.
