Your Zone Friday: Never gonna give you up

Things we’ve done and things we like this week

Don’t worry, Zone HQ hasn’t been Rickrolled. Yet. We’re just heaving a collective groan at this whole New Year’s resolution hoo-ha. Struggling to stay good is a drag. So we’ve been hanging out with beefcake bakers and losing our centre of gravity while we see out the cruellest month (T.S. Eliot was so wrong about April).

Three things we've done

Enjoyed testosterone toasties

Our Channel 4Food deputy editor Celia Plender and video producer Jen Faichnie took a trip to see the Fabulous Baker Brothers strut their stuff. Tom and Henry cooked up some lovely man toasties. Maybe it’s time to break out that Breville again…

Gone downhill

Our Relentless Energy Drink team, Mikee Chen and Ben Gomori, chatted to downhill gravity sports enthusiast Will Stephenson, who discussed his ambitious plans to create the UK’s first downhill gravity sports centre

Got glammed up

Forget all this going natural stuff. We can only go without our make-up for so long. So the Diet Coke Get Glam Together app is perfect for banishing the frosty frump that is January. Full of top beauty tips, it’s a new way to get ready on a Friday night.

This week’s data makeover

Oh, how quickly virtue turns to vice. We all try to be goody two-shoes but there are some things we simply could not give up. Take it from the top, Rick.

Zone hero of the week

Matthias Kandel has joined Zone as content strategist. Hailing from Berlin, Matthias will be analysing how big brands work. He’s also the Mayor of Zone on foursquare. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

Geek of the Week speaks

Our tech team are on a mission to shed their nerdy reputation. We chart their progress…

Ex-Zoner Sam Loomes has been welcomed back to the robo-bosom of the tech team after travelling to geek Mecca, Japan. While there he bought a feline camera for his no-doubt-imaginary girlfriend and went on a Godzilla tour. Sadly, there was no sign of Godzuki.

Zone staff share their creative moments

The inaugural Zone Origami Lunch Club took place this week. No, they don’t just make paper sandwiches and eat them. They make dinosaurs. Jurassic Park!

NEWSFLASH!

Our chief sub supreme, Jo Woodthorpe-Smith, is now on maternity leave. We’re really sad to see our spelling queen leave and wish her all the best. Kieran Lee will now be leading Zone’s team of grammar gurus. His biggest bugbear? Misplaced apostrophes (or should that be apostrophe’s?).

Three things we like

Flat 6  One of the BT family is off to university for further adventures. With Flat 6, BT has given a student spin to its new advertising campaign, featuring three flatmates with very different personalities.

Moonrise Kingdom Wes Anderson is a true Marmite director. But we can’t help but get a little excited about the trailer for his new film. Quirky kids, great soundtrack, Bill Murray. It’s all there. Twee hipster overload or better than The Royal Tenenbaums? Find out this summer.
